I have two daughters pursuing ballet. We have piles of pointe shoes around the house. Brand new ones and ones so broken and worn past the point of providing any kind of support. I’m always amazed ballerinas are supported by papier-mache shoes that come shiny and satiny, but must be banged out and broken in to mold to the dancer’s feet and keep the dancer on her toes to give the illusion of flight. Like my tetra pak plates that begin to fall apart the moment I begin printing, so too are ballet shoes falling apart from the moment the dancer puts them on.

제게는 발레를 하는 두 딸이 있습니다. 그래서 집안 곳곳에 토슈즈가 산더미처럼 쌓여 있죠. 새것부터 시작해, 더 이상 발을 지탱해 줄 수 없을 정도로 낡고 해진 것들까지 다양합니다. 처음에는 반짝이는 새틴 소재로 매끈해 보이지만, 무용수의 발 모양에 맞게 길들이고 두드려 부드럽게 만들어야 비로소 공중에 떠 있는 듯한 환상을 연출할 수 있게 해주는 이 종이 반죽(papier-mache) 소재의 신발을 보면 늘 경이로움을 느낍니다. 마치 인쇄를 시작하는 순간부터 형태가 허물어지기 시작하는 제 테트라팩(우유 팩) 판화용 판처럼, 발레 슈즈 또한 무용수가 신는 바로 그 순간부터 서서히 낡고 해체되어 가는 운명을 지니고 있습니다.
